This July 1, 1955 newspaper article states that Green Manufacturing’s basic product was “a line of plows.” This was, we believe, a continuation of the line of plows developed by Green when he was still running the Newgren Company.
The plow graphics shown in the above ad are the same as those used in Newgren ads.You can read more about the connection between the Newgren and Greenline plows here. An unsolved mystery is who supplied plows to Jeep in 1950 and 1955. We believe Green worked with some unknown manufacturer during and after the Newgren years. Whatever the case, the above newspaper article is proof that the plows were manufactured by Green and his “new” company.
More Jeep lift designs
This June 30, 1955 article states that “Green Manufacturing Co. makes the plow, water system, and the hydraulic lift in its own plant…” The lift design is a return to the Love/Newgren underbody format and appears similar to the Stratton design. As stated earlier, we believe Green had a hand in the Stratton lift before he left Willys.
There is no evidence that Green marketed the new lift, although tractor industry publications of the period list Green Manufacturing as a maker of hydraulic lifts. We tried to contact the Ohio DNR Division of Forestry, but they have no records of the “Smoke Chaser.”
A return to first love – hydraulics
In the decade after leaving Willys and the Jeep, Green appears to have focused on using hydraulics to help automate farm and construction activities.
The following article appeared in April, 1959, and provided the biggest clue yet to Green’s pre-Willys employment.
Note that hydraulic cylinders “are the plant’s biggest dollar item.”
By this time, the Farm Jeep era was nearing its end, and so was Green’s relationship to the Jeep.
